Compost is the under-appreciated secret to gardening. It lends no beauty to the garden and gardeners often wonder where to hide it. The pile needs to be close enough to trundle over Autumn leaves, lawn clippings, dead plants, weeds, and plant debris. A little water and regular turning produces temperatures that kills most of the weeds in the pile. Add time, and all of that waste is black, rich, compost. What was detritus is now an asset to feed the beds for new life.
Our lives need compost piles, too.
A place to pile all of the happenings of our days. The time to gain perspective. And perhaps most importantly, turning the heap and all of our accumulated fears, exposing them to air and light. Without the time for this reflection and turning, the insults in our lives, pain and guilt, can never be changed into compost to feed our lives.
Composting is a conscious choice in the garden, so too should it be in our lives.
