March 13 calendar iconHumanity evolved to live slowly. We walked and foraged. Hunting was done at a pace that conserved calories. We paused among the trees to see the world around us. Deep in our cells, these memories remain.

There is little equivalent in the modern world. Urban life separates us from that hard coding in our DNA. Life is rushed, lived on a schedule. Humanity is living longer, but more unwell. Millions struggle with physical and mental health. A life with no tools to live slowly with nature produces dis-ease.

Life in the garden proceeds at seasonal pace. Once a plant buds, there is little the gardener can do to speed it up. It will take the days it takes to sprout and grow. Each day we tend to our beds, clipping here, mulching there, pulling a weed or planting more seed, we practice slowness. It is not foraging, but it offers similar connections to nature. The garden reconnects us with living slowly, providing a method, tools for better health.
